Could the word in front of 'Settle' be 'scawrs' [=scars]?

Sherrin? No: his h/w is more precise. I don't think there is any association between Sherrin and Dulwich.

Scaur/scawr: I agree scar. It cropped up last Summer; the locality was in/near Huddersfield/Halifax if I remember aright. It's also an Ayrshire dialect word with the same meaning.
