"I. Hardy" is credited with being the collector or ex herb in a number of instances ( http://herbariaunited.org/specimensearch/?taxon=&taxonid=&collector=I+Hardy&colid=1771&role=prov&from=&to=&search=search&Country=gbie&VC=all&place=&placeid=&Inst=all&search=search#searchlist ).
This person is in fact John Hardy, (1817-84)*, his printed labels stating 'Herb:Brit:I.Hardy' where 'I' stands for 'Ioannis' the Latin (genitive case) for John.
* Britten & Boulger have these details - Hardy, John: b. York, 4 Nov. 1817; d. Manchester, 15 Sept. 1884. E.B.S. Ed. 1844. Contrib. to Phyt. i. 92. ' Leucojum vernum,' Journ. Bot, 1860, 88. Herb, at Manchester Univ. B.S.C. vii. 907. Ann. Bept, Manchester Sci. Students' Assoc., 1844 (portr.) |
