N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

I suspect Maxwelton rather than Maxwelltown (both Dumfriesshire). Any suggestions for collector (JC)?

Yes, that locality was very popular if you look in The Phytologist: a popular botanical miscellany, Volume 1 at archive.org, then there is an article about collecting in that area around that time (sadly no names with initials J C / J G etc).
