Maryborough, named after Queen Mary I, is now known as Portlaoise and is the county town of Co. Laois (Leix), formerly the Queen's County.

cf. Co. Offaly, formerly the King's County, named for King Philip.

Ironically, those sovereigns, no longer remembered because they were "British", were both Catholics.
