I couldn't find any 'Pipswell' or similar place; Townsend's other specimens this date are from Alscot (Park) near Atherstone on Stour SP2050

Sometimes a double-s in the old orthography (i.e. with a long s) has been misread - as in those cases where 'Russell' (Rufsell) was read as Rupell.

Sounds like a good place for a drink. Your suggestion has led me on a very redolent tour of the gazetteer but things remain fluid. Thanks for pooling your ideas anyway
