Biography
George Don junior FLS 29/4/1798 - 25/2/1856
Born at Doohillock, Forfar, 1798.
Son of George Don senior (1764-14/1/1814) who was also a botanist, and Caroline Stewart. His brother David Don (1799–1841) was another botanist.
1814 Working at Dickson’s Nursery in Edinburgh.
1819 moved to the Chelsea Physic Garden in London.
Became the first professional plant collector for the Horticultural Society of London. 1821 HMS Iphigenia collecting in the Canary Islands and Cape Verde, then Freetown, in Sierra Leone, Gambia and Guinea, St Thomas Islands, Ascension Island. With HMS Pheasant to Brazil, Trinidad, Jamaica, Grand Cayman Islands, Cuba, and New York 1821.
Returned to England February 1823.
Died in London in 1856.
Several plants named for him including Memecylon donianum, Polygala donii, and Oncidium donianum.
Author of "A General History of the Dichlamydeous Plants", Volumes 1 to 4.
One of the Forfar Botanists.
