Biography

Jaques Étienne Gay (born 1786 Switzerland – died 16th January 1864, in Paris) was a Swiss-French botanist, civil servant, collector and taxonomist. His labels are written in French and botanical Latin. He was the most famous of the students of botanist Jean François Aimée Gaudin with whom he began collecting plants at the age of 14. He was married to Rosalie Nillion.

In August, 1862 Gay visited the mountains of North Wales in the company of Charles Cardale Babington, who recorded on the 15th that "Mr. Gay was very much fatigued by his trip to Llyn-y-Cwm". Gay recovered sufficiently to climb Snowdon on the 18th August.

The botanical genus Gaya was named in his honour, as was the species Potamogeton gayi Bennett, 1892.
