Born 30 Jun 1830 at Wamphray, Dumfriesshre, Scotland.
Educated at Wamphray School, then Glasgow University; BA 1853; MA 1854; DD 1886.
Ordained (Church of Scotland) to Forgandenny, 1861.
Minister of Bothwell, 23 November 1865.
Married 27 Jul 1870 Margaret Wiseman Lang (1843-1933), lived at the Manse, Bothwell, 3 sons, 1 daughter.
Joint convener of Foreign Mission Committee, 1884.
Moderator of Assembly, 1899.
Convener of Committee on Christian Liberality, 1900-1909.
Died 21 Jan 1909 Largs, North Ayrshire, Scotland.
After his death his wife lived at 6 Clarendon Crescent Edinburgh.
