Maria Gosling, born 9/1845, was a pupil at the School instituted by J S Henslow at Hitcham, in the face of hostility of local farmers. He successfully taught botany on scientific principles and aimed to turn out pupils who could venture into employment other than as agricultural labourers. Maria was appointed as a pupil teacher at Eye, she later became a nurse domestic servant in Colchester, but further details not yet found.
