Documented by qgroom on 19th November 2008. Checked by wonastow Edit historyN.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names. Log-in to edit this sheet.

- County not stated, but this is one of a large set of sheets collected in Staffs 1840; I couldn't locate 'Graven Hanger'[??]

In 1833 Rev Thomas William Daltry (1804-1879) was appointed Vicar of Madeley, Staffs, and remained there till his death. Kent & Allen have an entry for Rev. Thomas William Daltry (1832-1904) - his son? There is a possibility that the Madeley 1840 specimens are Daltry pater's. |

The collection of Harold William Daltry (1887 - 1963) passed to the herbarium at Keele. http://www.bookrags.com/tandf/daltry-harold-william-tf/
He was the son of Rev Thomas William Daltry (1832 - 1904), Vicar at Madeley. T W Daltry was the son of John William Daltry, Vicar of Madeley
http://allsaints-madeley.org.uk/history/vicars.html.
T W Daltry contributed a paper on The Mistletoe to the North Staffs Field Club in 1975, he also contributed to The Entomologist. He was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1875, and fellow of the Royal Entomological Society in 1887. |

'Gravenhunger Moss' is what has been written though it is not in Staffs but vc 40 Shropshire.
As Chris Liffen has pointed out, Rev T W Daltry's father was Rev John (not Thomas) William Daltry (my original source was erroneous). C of E Clergy database confirms J W Daltry was appointed vicar of Madeley in 1833 and Crockford's Clerical Directory provides other biographical details. There is further information in FENSCORE.
Circumstantial evidence points to John William Daltry (1804-1879) as the collector of this and the other 'Madeley 1840' plants. |

I'll happily edit the other sheets accordingly, they are distinctive in appearance. One is labelled madeley in ink, with 'Graven Hunger' added later in pencil, which evidently could be either but the latter I assume more likely. |
