Inferred details are marked. Documented by lowfatspread on 2nd July 2008. Edit historyN.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names. Log-in to edit this sheet.

- I think this site is Barnham Common near Thetford which seems to be a locus classicus for the plant?

Do you think the date might be May 28th?

The label clearly says "Barham". There is a Barham at TM1451. |

If you are right, about the date being May, Chris, D M Heath was in Thetford that day.
Veronica verna GB, VC26 West Suffolk, Thetford Heath Douglas Montague Heath 28/5/1926 BIRM
Anthyllis vulneraria GB, VC28 West Norfolk, Thetford Douglas Montague Heath 28/5/1926 BIRM
I still think it is a field scribble - quite possibly by DMH himself (the date is written in his style), or perhaps by his Norfolk sidekick F. Robinson. There are no records on the database from Barham, Suffolk or Kent
Or am I getting carried away again?! |

Although the label is inscribed Barham, I wouldn't argue with any of the above; and Barnhamcross Common (which Heath called Barnham Common), adjoining Thetford and firmly on the Norfolk side of the river, is a site where Heath collected this species; and it does look like his handwriting. On the other hand, the species occurs widely across Suffolk, and Barham north of Ipswich at TM1451 is sandy enough, though no named 'Common' there that I see, also a bit off Heath's Norfolk-oriented itinerary. The site could be either, there are also Barhams in other counties including Kent and Cambs. But in the absence of anything more certain, I would go for a mis-spelt Barnham Common; in May when Heath was certainly round the area. |

Pardon silly mistake; on the 'Suffolk' side of the river, old VC of W Suffolk; modern Norfolk |
