Sir William Jackson Hooker's? Or Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker's? Have we decided which of the Hookers created 'Herbarium Hookerianum 1867'? And is it possible to access a handwriting samples for each? |

I would suggest William Hooker, Director of Kew from 1841.
Google finds a paper (Nuytsia *: J Western Australian Herbarium 23:63-88 [pdf]) in which it states:
"On the death of William Hooker in 1865, his private herbarium, which had been housed at Kew, was purchased by the state (1866)"
...and refers to "A circular hand stamp 'Herbarium Hookerianum 1867' indicating a specimen from Hooker's herbarium purchased 1866."
A page from Harvard University Herbarium shows an extract from a letter sent by William Hooker to Asa Gray, but I guess that a man of Hooker's standing might have had others to write labels.
* Nuytsia is an open access journal named after the "iconic Western Australian Christmas Tree Nuytsia floribunda". |
