The gov.uk Magic help webpage gives a map of the Ordnance Survey 100km grid squares showing both letter and number codes.

There is also a table showing their use. The example may help with grid references when they are written in alternative forms, such that ST391578, becomes 31/391578, or 3 391 1 578.
