I think this should be documented as two separate specimens. Although the barcoder has only recognized them as one entity the dates are certainly different and probably the recorder (and maybe also the localities).

Probably Kew can retrospectively add another accession number if needed.


The Roman camp on the right-hand label is probably Cilurnum

I wouldn't like to guess at either of the recorder names

I have split this into two specimens. Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries, Newcatle-upon-Tyne v. 5, (1911-12) p. 222 report Mr HJW Coulson (by that time of Blandford, Dorset) as owner of land at Thirwall, Northumberland, donating a stone found in the Roman Wall there. Earlier Coulson is described as 'of Newbrough Hall, Northumberland' in records of the award of a posthumous VC to his son in the Boer War. The Hall (NY874682) is about 4km SW of Cilurnum, and 8km NW of Hexham. The distance from Hexham to Carlisle is ~50km so the other specimen could have originated much further west.
