Tom,
William Mudd's signed initials "WM" have sometimes been confused with William Wise's "WW" (but Mudd's handwriting is muddier). Mudd collected at Kildale and (Great) Ayton vc 62 & also in south Co. Durham in and around 1852. Any records thence attributed to Wise are Mudd's (& there are unattributed collections that are also Mudd's).
He started as a gardener in Great Ayton and became curator, Cambridge Botanic Garden. He was also author of a couple of books on mosses. Despite what Kent & Allen may say, he was not a 'Rev.'.
David
P.S. I thought you said you would 'out' me.

Thanks v. much for this. I've edited some records, and will aim to get some more changed today.
(For others' benefit the confusion now is mostly with W. West rather than W.Wise)
regards,
Tom
P.S. I've emailed you. |
