I was surprised that Townsend's page has no handwriting specimens. I'm familiar with his 'curly' lettering, mostly on his annotations to Hume's sheets eg at top & bottom of

and his 'untidy' writing eg

- but there also seem to be debatable early examples in a more spikey script, associated with Joseph Woods and Daniel Oliver

David Price gives some examples of the 'spikey' style on http://herbariaunited.org/core/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12708
and I am cropping examples of Townsend's apparent 3 styles on his page
