N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

This seems a bit unlikely if he died in April of that year even if the curator has used date of death? (Why?)

It's an imported specimen record from BIRM (one of a couple of thousand sheets that had already been documented prior to the herb@home project). With those records, if the sheet date was missing then the convention was to use the collector's year of death - this allowed the record to be placed in a BSBI date-class even if the date was not accurate.

I've left such dates untouched so as to avoid a lot of edits which would be of limited use (in terms of adding information). Ideally I should provide a way to mark such date entries as 'inferred'.

To avoid any ambiguity, for new documentation, dates of death should not be used in this way as the system can already infer the latest possible date - so only accurate dates should be recorded for new specimen records.

regards,

Tom

Thanks, Tom. Very clear. I have posted a couple more similar ones. Have deleted collection date on the one documented here.
