I reckon the give-away is the altitude, 4,000 feet. On checking, guess where West was that month? Norway. Although I did not locate it any closer than that, I looked in my brand new £5 world atlas in the area where I think he was, Dovrefjell, and found Hjerkin, right in the shadow of a zonking great mountain, Snohetta, 2286 metres.
