This is the only example I have seen so far of Parson Ley collecting a plant on a Sunday.

I was curious about this - for some collectors I think the convention was rigidly observed.

I've been looking for ways to try to automatically validate records (looking for characteristics of a record which make it improbable) - collection weekday may be usable as one of a number of indicators.

For Ley collection day results are as follows:

Monday 685
Tuesday 911
Wednesday 922
Thursday 897
Friday 718
Saturday 470
Sunday 157

(this includes only specimens for which Ley is entered as the collector, rather than just ex herb, where the collection date is entered precisely)

If you want to get this for other collectors then when searching for specimens, having set up the search and got the results, edit the address bar adding

Code:
&weekday=6

before the '#searchlist' part at the end.

e.g. http://herbariaunited.org/specimensearch/?taxon=&taxonid=&collector=Rev.+Augustin+Ley&colid=2337&role=col&from=&to=&search=search&Country=gbie&VC=all&place=&placeid=&Inst=all&search=search&weekday=6#searchlist

where Monday is day 0, Tuesday 1 etc.

regards,

Tom

So Ley wasn't a strict Sabbatarian but work evidently restricted his time spent on botany on Sundays. I wonder if the Quakers were more observant.
Thanks for your interesting remarks.
