John Thomas Irvine Syme (1/12/1822-31/1/1888): Civil engineer and heir-in-waiting to the estate of Balmuto in Fife which he inherited in 1868 when he changed his name to Boswell-Syme.
Curator to the Botanical Society of London 1851-6 and then the Botanical Exchange Club 1868-75

Avid collector - plants, insects and shells. Friend of H C Watson. FLS 1854, appointed lecturer in Botany at Charing Cross Medical School and Westminster Hospital. Personal herbarium went to F J Hanbury and J C Melvill.
