In a lot of cases these cryptic initials on sheets dated in the 1850s from around Braemar can be read as 'A C' - Alexander Croall - although in this case the imagination is a little stretched!

Yes I definitely would say Croall. In some cases, his initials are written as a monogram almost looking like a crown
