Specimen #230774

Taxon:Orchidaceae: Epipactis helleborine (L.) Crantz ("Broad-leaved Helleborine")
Filed in taxon folder:Orchidaceae: Epipactis helleborine (L.) Crantz ("Broad-leaved Helleborine")
Collected by:Dr Gustavus A Ornano St Brody
Collection date:8/1891
Locality:Great Britain, VC16 West Kent, Cobham Park, TQ6868
Institution:Manchester Museum (MANCH)
Image:Epipactis helleborine herbarium specimen from Cobham Park, VC16 West Kent in 1891 by Dr Gustavus A Ornano St Brody.
fruits/flowers:mature flowers
notes:There are two places named Cobham Park. One in Surrey and the other in North Kent. Cobham Park, Kent is in the Gravesham District and apparently includes two SSSI areas and collectively these are known as Shorne and Ashenbank SSSI. It has not been possible to ascertain whether these sites would be suitable for epipactis - certainly not listed under current flora as describe by English Nature.

N.B. reporting of the edit history is currently fairly unclear and misleading. Most edits made to specimens appear as a pair of 'add' and 'delete' entries, which may not be together in the list. There are also often 'minor' edits, which are made automatically (rather than due to user activity), for example to merge synonym names.

An interesting exercise. However, if possible, would like to know to hat the '400 1341, media, Fries 85' refers

Epipactis media is a synonym for Epipactis atrorubens - certainly not a plant you would expect in Kent! It has been correctly assigned to E. helleborine, and indeed the collector appears to have had his doubts . . .

the citation for publication of the name Epipactis media is:

Epipactis media Fries [1842, Novit. Fl. Suec., Mant. 3 : 54

I assume that this stands for something like Novitates Flora Suecica
(i.e. 'Notes on the Swedish Flora' - the Fries family has given botany and mycology severable distinguished workers - this would have bee Elias Fries, 1794 - 1878)

the numbers will refer to lists which the collector used, either published ones (like the London Catalogue) or, rather less likely, their own personal ones

hope this helps

Thanks to Chris Yeates for the information following my request for clarification.

I will now 'google' some more.

Hope this message gets through.
