Frederick Long (1840-1927) practised as a doctor in Wells-next-the-Sea until 1899, when he retired to Norwich. He was a member of the Norfolk and Norwich Naturalists Society, serving as President and Vice-President, and he delivered a number of papers which were published in the Society's transactions. He recorded the first instance of a number of plants for Norfolk and one specimen for the country as a whole. He compiled a manuscript catalogue of the Salmon Herbarium which was in the possession of Norwich Castle Museum and updated the Latin plant names.
