Biography

Peter Gray (1818-1899)

Born, lived and died in Dumfries. The 1841 Census records him as living in the High Street, Dumfries with a Margaret and Mary Gray - (relationship not given). His occupation is recorded as Printer.

British Fungi, Lichens and Mosses, including Scale Mosses and Liverworts (1886, 2nd edition 1907), taken from an article by Mark Lawley.

His botanical collections focused mainly on Dumfries - see for example this entry in 'The Phytologist' Vol 3 : image:Pgray3.jpg

He was an Honorary member of The Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society. The transactions and journal of this society were printed at the Courier and Herald Offices in Dumfries. Peter Gray's death was recorded in the journal:
